There’s something undeniably magical about elopements. Stripped of the stress, the crowd, and the production of a traditional wedding, elopements bring the focus back to what matters most: the couple and their connection. As a photographer, I find elopement photography to be some of the most emotionally powerful and creatively fulfilling work I do.

What Is Elopement Photography?
Elopement photography is about documenting intimate weddings that often take place in unique, breathtaking locations—mountaintops, forests, coastlines, or even cozy backyard settings. These aren’t rushed or secretive getaways anymore; modern elopements are intentional, deeply personal celebrations of love.
Unlike traditional weddings, there are no rigid timelines or lengthy shot lists. Instead, I get to capture unscripted moments—laughing during a hike, sharing a quiet vow exchange at sunrise, or dancing under the stars with only the crickets as witnesses.

Why I Love Photographing Elopements
Elopements allow couples to be completely themselves. They’re not performing for an audience or ticking boxes—they’re present. That raw authenticity translates into images that are deeply emotional, unposed, and real.
From a creative perspective, elopements are incredibly inspiring. I’ve followed couples through alpine lakes at dawn, stood on the cliffs of Big Sur during golden hour, and photographed barefoot beach vows where the only soundtrack was the ocean.

Tips for Couples Planning to Elope
If you're thinking of eloping, here are a few quick tips from a photographer’s perspective:
  • Choose a meaningful location: Whether it’s your favorite national park or the city where you first met, pick a spot that tells your story.
  • Plan for lighting: Sunrise and sunset are ideal for photography, so structure your ceremony around those golden hours.
  • Wear what feels like you: Comfort and confidence go a long way in making your photos feel natural.
  • Hire a photographer who knows elopements: Someone who understands timelines, lighting, and the challenges of remote shoots can make all the difference.

Eloping Doesn’t Mean Settling for Less
Some people think eloping means "just getting it over with." But for so many couples, it’s the opposite—it’s choosing an experience that feels like home. As an elopement photographer, I get to help create and capture that experience. And let me tell you: the intimacy, the tears, the laughter, the epic landscapes—none of it is less. It’s more.
